using the girl in a shoplifting attempt. she is expected to arrive at the jail in 10 minutes here. investigators say last month she used her daughter in a shoplifting attempt in morgan hill. the mother took off when an employee confronted the girl. san francisco police are asking asking for help in solving a shooting death. they believe this sketch resembled the man -- resembles the man. witnesses describe the shooter in his 20s, 5'9", and wearing a blue golden state warriors jacket. what is it going to take to stop the violence? that is what they are asking tonight in oakland after five people were killed during 18

hours this week. ktvu's paul chambers tells us some want the governor to declare a state of emergency. paul? >> reporter: there have been 94 homicides in oakland this year. a number that is not sitting well with anyone. >> reporter: police say with the uptick in crime it is time for the community to ban together. city and community leaders showed a united front. police say they are not connected but the victims were targeted. >> the city experienced five murders in just an 18 hour period. cannot be allowed to continue. >> people are dying. man, is anyone interested in that? i know houses are broken in to, robbery, theft, but how does that equate when you are dealing with the lives of human. >> they are working on a gun

from a citizen of burglars breaking into a home through a backdoor today in san jose. we are not showing faces bus the suspects are juveniles. but in the pictures they are smiling while carrying merchandise. >> cash, ipads, computers, apple devices, electronics, tvs. >> reporter: they believe they burglarized two homes in the past two days but a neighborhood captured the car. so when the vehicle was spotted and the passengers were seen this morning, police swarmed the neighborhood, two suspects surrendered on the spot. >> taken into custody right here. >> investigators are checking to see if they are responsible for other burglaries. according to the figures, there was a spike in the 1st quarter of 2012 compared to last year

the all time average of $4.61. ktvu's john sasaki is here to tell us what is driving all of this. john? >> reporter: three different gas stations, you can see how high prices are. $4.31. $4.73 and $4.75. prices jumped in the past week across the bay area and the state. not because of shortage of crude oil. this jump is do to a slowing in production that started with the chevron refinery. we met with the president of robinson oil who says whole sale gas prices gone up a dollar in less than two weeks. >> over the last week or so there have been other problems. the most ceasier is the exxon

organization and the teachers that work and live in this city cannot have a voice equal to theirs. >> organizers plan to go to 23 states. tuition went up 3.9% last year at america's private colleges. while it is higher than the general rate of inflation it is the smallest in 40 years. the average tuition this fall at a private fall runs $29,230. officials say people in 23 states, including california, could be at risk for contracting fungal meningitis from a steroid. so far there have been 35 people sickened, including patients in tennessee. 5 have died. no one in california has been reported ill. however facilities in three

for game three on tuesday and four and five innecessary. the giants -- if necessary. the giants face the red, saturday night at 6:30 p.m. game two also at at&t on sunday. the best of five shifts to cincinnati for game three along with games 4 and 5 if necessary. sharks fans will lose out on five games. today the league canceled the first two weeks of the season, 82 games. the players were locked out last month when the collective- bargaining agreement with the nhl expired. three of the games were scheduled to be at home. an expensive clean up is underway in washington, d.c. at the reflecting pool. today workers drained the water and shoveled out dead algae.

it became a mess weeks after it reopened following a renovation. now the park service is spending $100,000 more to clean the pool and refill it with water containing more ozone. curiosity is close to a milestone. nasa says it is in the right location to collect the scoop of soil for analysis. scientists had to move curiosity to a place with the right environmental conditions and then it looked for soil that might have life. it will do additional testing before collecting the samples. with the cooler weather this weekend, a lot of people may be thinking about making a fun visit to apple hill. it is east of placerville. they are planning for crowds in the thousands this weekend and they will be enjoying

a girl's plea for help was answered today with the return of her stolen dog. he offered to give away her piggy bank savings for the return of her dog. investigators say the dog disappeared after the home was burglarized on monday. today the dog was returned after he was found 80 miles away in the parking lot of a target store. >> it is not just the fact he is back and my daughter is happy again, the fact that the community helped. i couldn't have done it without the community. >> the woman who found the puppy was also there. she was shopping when she found the dog. she took it home and when she read the story she contacted the family. she did not have to give up her piggy bank savings.
